Michael Haghighat and Ms. Deepa Gupta from Globalview Advisors attended the Orange County Chapter of Financial Executives International (OC-FEI) Dinner Meeting held at The Pacific Club in Newport Beach. The evening’s topic was presented by Robert Hemphill, Founder and CEO of Sunshine Solders, who has an extensive background in the energy industry, and provided an objective and insightful outlook on the trends in electrical generation and usage, plus their ramifications on costs and the environment. He translated his information into ideas and trade-offs that we can use for our companies and families and communities.
Mr. Hemphill was one of the three executives who started AES, a global electric power company in 1981 and managed its growth from a small startup to a Fortune 150 corporation. AES owns and operates 32,000 MW of power plants in 18 countries around the globe and makes 12% of California’s energy. Mr. Hemphill led the purchase of SeaWest, a 90 MW wind company, in 2004. He also started the AES utility battery storage business, which has now grown to be the largest such utility effort in the world. Mr. Hemphill in 2008 founded AES Solar Power Ltd. and led it from its inception until the end of 2013. The company grew from a small start-up to become a leading developer of utility-scale photovoltaic solar plants, with fifty-one solar plants (526 MW) in seven countries and $2.5 billion in assets.
Since moving to California, Hemphill has published two humorous books about his energy, international and business experience: Dust Tea, Dingoes and Dragons, and Stories from the Middle Seat. He is a columnist for Huffington Post, and advises several small renewable energy companies.
The meeting’s Professional Development Session on “Updates from the Hill: How President Trump Will Affect your Business” was presented by Mary Moore Hamrich, National Managing Principal, Public Policy, Washington DC from Grant Thornton. Business leaders and key decision makers are looking toward the future, thinking about what the Trump administration and Republican-controlled Congress will mean for their businesses, in both the short and long term. Preparedness is the best solution to uncertainty and Grant Thornton is out front on the issues most likely to impact your business.
